Day 5 Wrap – 2022 AJC

The final day of our Championships wrapped up with a big day of Finals action, The weather was just about perfect for jumping with warm sunny conditions throughout the day and a large appreciative crowd watching on. Let’s have a look at how all the action unfolded today.

HORSELAND – AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP (FINAL) – 1.25-1.35m

The first class on the Pryde’s Main Arena was the final of the 2022 Horseland Australian Junior Championship, with the win going to Claire Zylstra and Harvey B. They came into today’s Final carrying four penalties and across the two rounds today, only collected a further four, to finish on a total of eight. Second place in the Championship went to NSW’s Jett Newman and Wanda, who came into the final in equal tenth place, however, two fantastic clear rounds meant they stayed on 11 penalties. Cody Tincknell and James Continue, the leader going into the Final, took three rails today to finish on 12 penalties to secure third. RACING HEARTS – AUSTRALIAN YOUNG RIDER CHAMPIONSHIP (FINAL) – 1.35-1.45m

The second major Final for the day was the Racing Hearts Australian Young Rider Championship which saw Clemency Hughes and Diamond B Corvina taking a well-deserved victory. They came into today’s final on the minimum number of penalties (zero) and after two brilliant rides, only added a single rail to finish with a total of four. Finishing second in the Championship for the second year in a row was Conor Reed, this year combining with Alpha Activity. They finished just one penalty behind the winners. In third place, finishing with a total of seven penalties were Ginger Jilly and Diamond B Vancouver. Our thanks goes to Racing Hearts for their generous support of this Championship.

PRYDE’S EASIFEED – AUSTRALIAN SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP (FINAL) – 1.50-1.65m

The major Championship of the program was the Pryde’s EasiFeed Australian Senior Championship which was run and won this afternoon and what an incredible competition it was. The title has gone to NSW combination Tom McDermott and his stallion Cachassini II. It was McDermott’s third Senior title, winning previously in 2012 and 2019. After winning both preliminary rounds, they went into today’s final on zero penalties and gave nobody else a chance taking just a single rail over the two rounds today. Second place went to Izabella Stone and Oaks Ventriloquist. After starting the day in equal thirteenth place, they produced a pair of clear rounds to finish the day on an unchanged score while others fell by the wayside. In third place were the Queensland combination of Mattea Davidson and Checkamour D. They started the day in qual fifth place and a single rail during today’s two rounds, saw them finish on 13 penalties, just one point clear of fourth. JPR EQUESTRIAN – OPAL SERIES (FINAL) – 1.04m

The first Final decided this morning on Flemings Nurseries Arena 2 was the final of the JPR Equestrian Opal Series. After each of the three preliminary rounds, combinations were ranked, based on their finishing positions and the top 50% of entrants qualified for today’s final.

Going into the Final, Zara Adnams and Dingmac Disco King were atop the leaderboard, having won all three preliminary classes, so it was no surprise when they produced a fantastic double clear performance, including a scintillating jump-off round to win the championship. Their jump-off time of 30.68 seconds was the fastest of 22 double clear performances in what was a very high-quality final. Second place went to Abbey Coates and Wafalu Nulla who took 31.18 seconds to complete the jump-off course, while Olivia Curtain and Xcella were third in 31.24 seconds.

VRANKEN-POMMERY AUSTRALIA – RUBY SERIES (FINAL) – MINIMUM 1.25m

Wrapping up the action on Fleming Nurseries Arena 2 was the Vranken-Pommery Ruby Series. Combinations qualified for this final via their performances in a pair of qualifying classes run earlier in the week. Going into today’s final, two combinations, namely Rebecca Jenkins and Festa D and Carly Overton and Pabello were equal leaders on the leaderboard, however neither of these combinations was able to convert that into a win today.

The winning combination in the final was Sally Simmonds and Chio MS who had the fastest double clear performance with a jump-off time of 40.99 seconds. Second place went to Rebecca Jenkins and Festa D who stopped the clock in the jump-off at 42.08 seconds. The fastest of the other three double clears were George Johnson and Wallaroo Carina, finishing in 46.18 seconds. RACING VICTORIA – OFF THE TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP (FINAL) – 1.20m

There was just one class held today on the main grass arena; the final of the Racing Victoria Off The Track Championship. The top 20 combinations after two qualifying rounds were invited into the Final which saw a 6-way jump-off required to determine the winner. After the jump-off there were still two combinations on zero, so it came down to time. The winner of the class with a jump-off time of 38.82 seconds were Katie Clark and Katelle Grand, which followed on from their win in the second qualifying class yesterday. Just as they were second in that class, Sam McCrae and Jamieson had to be content with second place today, finishing double clear in 39.41 seconds. Jamie Coman and Trespasser took a single rai in the jump-off to finish in third place.

CHASE EQUESTRIAN – IVORY SERIES (FINAL) – 0.85m

The first Final decided this morning on Tulara Warmbloods Arena 3 was the final of the Chase Equestrian Ivory Series. After each of the two preliminary rounds, combinations were ranked, based on their finishing positions and the top 50% of entrants qualified for today’s final.

Going into the class, Sunday Borrack and Tane Mahuta were at the top of the leaderboard and their performance today justified that position. They took the win in a wonderful double clear performance. Their time in the jump-off was 32.51 seconds, which was just on 3.5 seconds faster than their nearest rivals. Second place, also double clear were Zhoe Willison and the mare Totoka Lodge Dazzle Me in a time of 36.12. Rounding off the podium and providing the only other double clear performance were Harry Manning and Wychwood, who finished in 37.82 seconds.

YANDOO EQUESTRIAN SERVICES – PEARL SERIES (FINAL) – 0.95m

The final of the Yandoo Equestrian Services Pearl Series was the last class on the program on the Tulara Warmbloods Arena 3. The series, decided over three rounds and today’s final saw the top 50% of entrants in the preliminaries qualify. The best performed combination over the three rounds were Queensland’s Lorna Clifford and the mare Ngahiwi Possum who had two wins and a fourth placing in the qualifying rounds.

That form from the preliminary rounds unfortunately for them, did not hold up, with a rail in the jump-off relegating them to finish eleventh. The win today with a scintillating jump-off round, almost four seconds clear of their nearest rival, went to Eliza Abrahams and Cody. They were double clear in 29.19 seconds, the fastest of 10 double clear performances in the class. Second place went to Zhoe Willison and Totoka Lodge Dazzle Me with a time of 32.95. They were a second clear of the third placed combination of Lorna Clifford and the gelding Kahean Trooper Nelson (33.94 seconds).
